Ruins Of Xunantunich

About 40 km from the Tikal complex in Guatemala, Xunantunich was a major ceremonial center.   From its perch on a natural limestone ridge, visitors have a fantastic view of the surrounding area.  And though the center is only one square kilometre, it is home to 25 temples and palaces including the second tallest Mayan structure in Belize, the pyramid El Castillo.  The site was the first one in Belize that was open to the public, in 1954, and now it has a highly praised on-site museum.

The religion of the citizens of Xunantunich helped build this city up to the ceremonial center that it became.  To understand it is to understand in at least some way the people of this once great city.  It is believed that the temples and stelae focus on fertility and the warlords.  They have a tendency to portray the warlords and their ancestors as the source of fertility of all Mayans.  So all of these structure stress sexual symbolism in one way or another.  Some theories suggest that an earthquake caused the abandonment of the city.

Lamanai Mayan Ruins Belize

Lamanai Mayan Ruins Belize

Looming over the west bank of the New River Lagoon, Lamanai Mayan Ruins, or "submerged crocodile," is off the beaten track-perhaps the reason why it thrived for over 3000 years. The city of Lamanai Mayan Ruins began its regional supremacy around 1500 B.C. Extending from the formative years of the Mayan world to the preaching friars of Spanish colonists, Lamanai Mayan Ruins flourished and supported a vast community of farmers, merchants, and traders.
You might even find the profile of Crocodile Mask at the base of Temple N-9-56, Lamanai. Named for the thriving crocodile population in the nearby New River lagoon, Lamanai's main structures and excavated artifacts exhibit many representations of the famed reptile. Because some of Lamanai's ruins are some of the oldest in Belize dating back to 700 B.C., the site has received more attention than other archaeological sites in the country. Still, of the 700 buildings within the complex, less than five percent have been excavated and explored. Aside from the central pyramid, thick forest has consumed many of the limestone mounds that housed the thousands of Mayan inhabitants. With a population exceeding 35,000 at the height of the city's power, Lamanai's trading influence extended over the borders of present-day Guatamala, Honduras, Mexico, and Belize.

Artifacts Recovered from Excavation at Lamanai

Abnormally high concentrations of corn pollen scattered throughout the area indicate Lamanai Mayan Ruins originated as an agriculturally based settlement. As the Classic Period came to an end in the ninth and tenth centuries, many of the neighboring Mayan cities proceeded through a period of decay to final collapse. Lamanai survived this time of upheaval and continued trade with sites in the northern part of the Yucatan Peninsula on into the Post-Classic Period. Copper, tin, and bronze objects flowed into Lamanai from sources in west Mexico, the Oaxaca Valley, and probably middle Central America. Lamanai also profited from intense immigration from the fringes of nearby cities that were undergoing gradual abandonment. The Main Temple at Lamanai Under Reconstruction

Altun Ha Tours

Altun Ha Mayan Ruins is the name given ruins of an ancient Maya city in Belize, located in the Belize District about 30 miles (50 km) north of Belize City and about 6 miles (10 km) west of the shore of the Caribbean Sea.
"Altun Ha Mayan Ruins" is a modern name in the Mayan language, coined by translating the name of the nearby village of Rockstone Pond. The ancient name is at present unknown.
The largest of Altun Ha's temple-pyramids, the "Temple of the Masonry Altars", is 54 feet (16 m) high. A drawing of this structure is the logo of Belize's leading brand of beer, "Belikin".
The site covers an area of about 5 miles (8 km) square. The central square mile of the site has remains of some 500 structures.
Archeological investigations show that Altun Ha Mayan Ruins were occupied by 200 BC. The bulk of construction was from the Maya Classic era, c. 200 to 900 AD, when the site may have had a population of about 10,000 people. About 900 there was some looting of elite tombs of the site, which some think is suggestive of a revolt against the site's rulers. The site remained populated for about another century after that, but with no new major ceremonial or elite architecture built during that time. After this the population dwindled, with a moderate surge of reoccupation in the 12th century before declining again to a small agricultural village. The ruins of the ancient structures had their stones reused for residential construction of the agricultural village of Rockstone Pond in modern times, but the ancient site did not come to the attention of archeologists until 1963, when the existence of a sizable ancient site was recognized from the air by pilot and amateur Mayanist Hal Ball.
Starting in 1965 an archeological team lead by Dr. David Pendergast of the Royal Ontario Museum began extensive excavations and restorations of the site, which continued through 1970. Among the discoveries is a large (almost 10 pounds, or 5 kilograms) piece of jade elaborately carved into an image of the head of the Mayan sun god, Kinich Ahau. This jade head is considered one of the national treasures of Belize.

The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center receives almost 15,000 school children every year.
The Belize Zoo focuses on educating visitors about the wildlife of Belize through encountering the animals in their natural habitat. Actun Tunichil Muknal Caving Adventure

Through work alongside archaeologists, ACTION BOYS BELIZE is one of only four companies within Belize awarded permission to lead groups into newly uncovered caves such as Actun Tunichil Muknal. Recent press coverage can be found in National Geographic Adventurer and the New York Times. Actun Tunichil Muknal is a cave in Belize, near San Ignacio Cayo, notable as a Maya archaeological site that includes skeletons, ceramics, and stoneware. The most famous of the human remains is known as "The Crystal Maiden", the skeleton of a teenage girl, probably a sacrifice victim, whose bones which have been completely calcified by the natural processes of the cave, leaving them with a sparkling crystallized appearance. There are several areas of skeletal remains in the main chamber.
The ceramics at the site are significant partially because they are marked with "kill holes", which indicates they were used for ceremonial purposes. Many of the Mayan artifacts and remains are completely calcified to the cave floor. The Mayans also modified cave formations here. Some to create altars for the offerings, others created silhouettes of faces and animals, some projecting a shadow image in the cave. The cave is extensively decorated with cave formations in the upper passages.
Animal life in the cave includes a large population of bats, large fresh water crabs, crayfish, catfish and other tropical fish, Large invertebrates like Amblypygi and various predatory spiders also inhabit the cave. Agouti and Otters may also use the cave. This and many other species are quite common in river caves of this size in Belize.
